How To Turn Your Building
into a Time Bank Community
A time bank is just a formal way of mapping the way a community
works; it's just good neighbours giving and taking, and helping each other.
You don't have to be a formal time bank to make your building a friendlier,
happier, healthier community. You don't even have to live a large building;
all you need is an interest in history, or your community, or a hobby or
practical advice you would like to share with others.
Chenies Street Chambers shows you how to
set up a group of interested people to research the history of your building,
and how to set up community projects for the people of the building, such
as historical prints, a book exchange, a communal garden, choosing the colours
for the communal corridors, setting up a Friends of the Garden or Friends
of the Park Club.
Setting Up a Residents' Association shows you
how to set up a grassroots, democratic Residents' Association where everyone
is invited to be involved, and everyone is welcomed. It includes a recommended
Residents' Association Constitution for your building, and it also offers
advice on how to complain effectively.
HOW WE LIVE NOW lets you
look critically at your building, to see if there are things you could improve.
Although it is set up to map the well-being of people in large multi-residential
buildings, even if you own your own home, take the test! You may find
you're your own slumlord! The site offers advice on fire hazards, damp,
pests such as cockroaches, and suggests low-maintenance, wonderful plants
for your garden.
ACCESS FOR ALL gives you important information
about preparing your home and building for life, making it accessible to
people with disabilities. It also has a list of arts places which are easily
accessible for all people.
PARKS is a resource website for people thinking
of setting up a Friends of the Park for their local Park or Village
Green and it includes things like Arts in The Parks, Dog-Walking, working
with your local Council, guerilla gardening, and also the Purple Poets' own
2009 Project 'The Poetry Tree' (painting designated benches around
trees in parks purple, and using them as spaces to recite poetry).

Time Banks and Time Banking
The Four Core Values |
1. We treat people as assets.
We support the positive actions people can
and want to do for their community.
2. We are re-defining work
Regardless of the task,
everyone's time is valued equally
we value whatever it takes to make
neighbourhoods safe and vibrant.
3.We reciprocate.
We require that everyone gives something back
ensuring all in our society have the opportunity
to be involved in their community.
4. We support the development of social networks.
These require ongoing investments of social capital
generated by trust, reciprocity and civic engagement.
