Poetry For All

Over the next year, The Purple Poets will be learning about making webpages text-accessible for people with visual impairments and small computers.

LESSON ONE: September 14th, 2009.
Advice for testing your site for appropriate accessibility,
from Marshall Seltzner, graphic designer (Cenlyt Designs)

There is a new online web reader which you could use to hear how your page “sounds” for people using a web reader. It isn’t perfect, but it will give you an idea. It is at http://webanywhere.cs.washington.edu/wa.php.

It will automatically load its example page (press the ctrl key to pause and restart the reader). All you have to do to test your page is enter the page address in the top frame and it is ready to go.

The other test is try it in a text only browser - http://www.delorie.com/web/lynxview.html Again, put your page address where requested.

The next test is for color impairment. Go to http://colorfilter.wickline.org/ and play with the options. Since you primarily use a white background, there shouldn’t be any problems.

And finally, if you want to test for accessibility standards, go to http://www.contentquality.com/ and follow the instructions.

Bet you didn’t know there were so many ways to test a page. [M.S]

TRY THIS WEBPAGE WITH THESE TESTS.

SEE HOW THE COLOUR PURPLE CHANGES?

HOW EASY IS IT TO READ THE VARIOUS COLOURS AND SIZES?

CAN YOU SEE WHEN THE PAGE WAS LAST UPDATED?

Aria's Scientific Experiment
(for Aria who is only ten)
By Bithi Das   21.08.2009

You scream
I Scream

It is little Aria's
Scientific Dream.

A five Minute Ice Cream.

In a bag
Mix the chocolate, sugar and cream
Put the mixture
In a salty- ice rim

All goes in our purple box.

THEN

Shake your arm
Shake your ass
Don't worry
It won't smash.

Five minutes gone
The ice cream is done
Now the time to test

Oh - Yes
It is one of the best!

The Four Core Values.

1. We treat people as assets.
We support the positive actions people can
and want to do for their community.

2. We are re-defining work
Regardless of the task,
everyone's time is valued equally
we value whatever it takes to make
neighbourhoods safe and vibrant.

3.We reciprocate.
We require that everyone gives something back
ensuring all in our society have the opportunity
to be involved in their community.

4. We support the development of social networks.
These require ongoing investments of social capital
generated by trust, reciprocity and civic engagement.
