WORDS AND MUSIC FOR THE SONG 'RAISINS AND
ALMONDS'
other
translations and recordings of the song
Raisins and Almonds (Rozhinkes mit Mandlen) is thought
to be a traditional song made popular by Abraham Goldfaden (1840-1908) in
the Yiddish musical "Shulamith."
Unter Yideles vigele
Shteyt a klor-vise tsigele
Dos tsigele iz geforn handlen
Dos vet zine dine baruf
Rozhinkes mit mandlen
Slof-zhe, Yidele, shlof.
In Fredelle Bruser Maynard's novel, and in the play Raisins and Almonds, the song has been playfully changed by Freidele's parents to make it specifically about Freidele.
Under Freidele's little bed
A white goat lays his silken head
The goat goes tripping down the street
To buy raisins and almonds for my sweet,
Raisins and almonds are tasty food
Freidele will be healthy and good
Goodness and health
are the best things to own
Freidele will read Torah
when she is grown.
Rozhinkes mit Mandlen (Raisins and Almonds) [4:01]
Language: Yiddish
Music: Traditional, ascribed to Abraham Goldfaden
This well known lullaby may be paraphrased as follows: 'Under little Yidele's
cradle is a snow white billy goat; This billy goat has been to market; And
so it shall be Yidele's calling too - To go to market and trade in raisins
and almonds; But sleep now, my Yidele, sleep'.

Todros Geller's woodcut Raisins and Almonds was inspired by a Yiddish
poem of the same title. The founder of the modern Yiddish theatre, Abraham
Goldfaden, wrote the poem in 1880 as part of his operetta Shulamis, which
features a mothers singing a lullaby to her son. The poem is an allegory
of the Jewish people's longing to return to their homeland:
Under Babys cradle in the night
Stands a goat so soft and snowy white
The Goat will go to the market
To bring you wonderful treats
Hell bring you raisins and almonds
Sleep, my little one, sleep.
In Eastern Europe, goats were an important staple of Jewish life, believed
to be endowed with mystical qualities.
