A Short History of Time
(online)
Bloomsbury Time Bank member
(and secret poet)
Sarah Kazlova writes:
I started at Timebanking UK in August 2005, and one of the first things that
time banks were asking for was new software. They wanted new functionality
not provided by the current American TimeKeeper and they also wanted the
ability to share time credits nationally between time banks.
Time Online began its first incarnation in early 2006 after extensive
consultation with a specific user group made up of time bank brokers. It
wasn't fully released until spring of 2006 following another round of feedback
sessions. This has been how Time Online has continued ever since,
with updates and changes being made following member consultation. The name
Time Online was actually decided at the 2006 conference in Cardiff
following a competition in which Julie Baxter of Fair Shares Gloucester
won.
It is a secure broker-lead system, which is fully customisable to the way
the time bank is run. There are currently 105 time banks using Time
Online, which makes it the number one system in the UK.
One of the major benefits of this software being done in-house is that brokers
can ring us for support or one-off reports if they aren't already available
on the extensive reporting system.
April 2010 saw the first tentative steps at a pilot for individual members
of time banks to log in to the software to manage their own exchanges. Members
can view their details, check their statement and search available services
to request one - this request goes via the broker who then sets up the exchange.
Members cannot currently see or contact other members directly, as this has
been an area that is very controversial, particularly with vulnerable adults
in the time bank.

The Purple Poets' Poetry Workshop is hosted by The Bloomsbury Time Bank,
which is a cashless, member-led, vitual TIme Bank affiliated with Time Banking
UK
(Stroud).
Various London time
bank poetry groups were founded in 2005 as part of a London-wide poetry group
scheme administered by nef and funded by the Lottery for Time Banks
with a grant from The Arts Council. Over the years, from that first
encouragement for form a group, The Purple Poets' champions have
included primarily The West Euston Time Bank (thanks for applying for
all the grants through all those years for us Tony!), Camden Council grants,
The Carnegie Trust, City BridgeTrust, The Third Age Project (thanks
for all the hours of work, Urmi!) , and the new economics
foundation.
The
Purple Poets were funded from May 2005 to August
2010 by the West Euston Time Bank, and many of their projects
were with the help of their fellow members from the Third Age Project.
20.20.2010. The Purple Poets now host themselves at the Bloomsbury Time
Bank.

Time Banks and Time Banking
The Four Core Values |
1. We treat people as assets.
We support the positive actions people can
and want to do for their community.
2. We are re-defining work
Regardless of the task,
everyone's time is valued equally
we value whatever it takes to make
neighbourhoods safe and vibrant.
3.We reciprocate.
We require that everyone gives something back
ensuring all in our society have the opportunity
to be involved in their community.
4. We support the development of social networks.
These require ongoing investments of social capital
generated by trust, reciprocity and civic engagement.
