HENRY WOOLF
BIOGRAPHY:
On National Poetry Day, 2007, Henry has very generously
given up his time mid-morning to do a reading and workshop with the London
Time Bank Poets; in the evening he will be appearing in Pinter's The
Hothouse at the National Theatre. His first book of poetry is
In The MousetrapThe Mouse is King. As well as writing poetry, he has
also written plays and comic sketches and is an acclaimed actor, director
and producer. In 1957, he directed the first production of Harold Pinter's
first play The Room at the University of Bristol. In a long and
accomplished career, Henry has worked with, amongst others, Harold Pinter,
Peter Brooks, and Orsen Welles and performed in the first production
of Brecht's Man is Man.
He was called a "living icon of the theatrical avant-garde" by Richard Eyre
and Nicholas Wright in the BBC TV series and companion book A View of
British Theatre in the Twentieth Century. He has toured extensively
with his award-winning production of Hancock's Last Half Hour and
is also much loved for his role as the lecherous guru "Arthur Sultan"
in Eric Idle's spoof of The Beatles, The Rutles.
Henry Woolf became the Head of the Drama Department at the University of
Saskatchewan in 1983. He was a founding member of the Shakespeare on the
Saskatchewan Festival in 1984. He is married to actor/director
Susan Williamson and they currently reside in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Henry Woolf, 2005
In his particular desert
The lakes are plastic.
The rocks cardboard,
And people vanish when you
Turn them sideways.
In the glass trees a thin wind
Moans for what might have been.
But where you, just once,
With a smile perhaps,
Filter the dead border
Moss and small grasses happen,
Grey becomes green.
Nowhere Somewhere,
Spies whisper promises.
